Week 14: Colette

This week was going to be another lazy week, but then I found out that Sarai from Colette patterns is going to be in Boston on Saturday, April 6th! Yay!! So, I switched my schedule so that I am now free to mosey on down to Bean-town and meet this fabulous pattern maker. Obviously I need something to wear. Obviously. Enter, Laurel, the new shift pattern from Colette.

Now, I can already hear the groans and you all saying, "Maggie, did you not learn your lesson before?!?! Cray self-imposed deadlines are not good!" And I will quip back to to you, "I don't give a damn." Clearly I did not learn anything at all. And, I do have a backup plan. For real! I made a black wool Meringue skirt two winters ago and can alway wear that if this idea fails, or isn't hemmed by Saturday. But who are we kidding, you know I will be willing to hem that baby in the car ride down! :)

Now whether you are for or against me, this is my decision. I have printed the pattern, now I just need to tape it together, trace the pattern, make a muslin and then make the same dress again. And it is Tuesday.

Wait. This is a familiar feeling: tightening in my chest, breathing is getting faster, stomach is churning. Uh-oh. Maybe, I will attempt a "wearable muslin". Or just wear the Meringue skirt instead. I don't think I am up for another marathon of sewing.

I do want to make a Laurel to enter the fabulous sewing contest that is being held on the Colette website, so maybe I will make a muslin and then see how I feel. If I think it is easy enough, maybe I will try. Maybe. Right, this feels much better. I feel like some sanity has arrived and perhaps prevailed. If I keep pushing myself too hard, this much beloved hobby will turn into torture!

So this week, my goal is to make a muslin of the Laurel pattern. Did you hear me my friends? Just a muslin. Just a muslin. ( I kind of feel like that friend that swears up and down to you that the other person is "just a friend" when in reality it is someone they are getting really serious with! Hah!)

Just a muslin. ;)

What is on your agenda this week? Any fun muslins in your life right now? And is anyone coming to Boston for Saturday's festivities?!?!

  1. Girl, you got this! I had to talk myself out of insanity when I desperately wanted to make a Laurel dress for Easter... on Saturday afternoon... when I had ten people coming for lunch the next day... and hadn't started cooking ANYTHING. Ha! But I put a muslin together in an hour or so-- this dress comes together quickly! You can do it!

    1. Really?!?! Okay, Sonja, you have me convinced! I CAN do this. I already think I have figured out which fabric to use for my "muslin" :)

    1. Shocking! ;) Honestly, this dress reminds me of you a lot. Maybe it was meant to be. I shall have a closet full of Laurels!

Okay, that sounded way creepier than I expected it to :)

  3. Hehehe what you said about "just a muslin" being like "just friends" is cracking me up. I'm sure you"ll whip up a laurel in time, what fabric are you picking? And I'm so jealous of Boston!

    1. I have made slightly more than a muslin...but we knew that was bound to happen :) I am currently working with a black swiss dot underlined with navy batiste! I don't know if it will be too cold to wear it tonight, but I am gonna try!!

  4. I vote wearable muslin and I don't think it's crazy! It's a really simple design and fitting adjustments will be pretty straightforward. Since the edges are finished with bias tape, even if you make your own, it should be much quicker since you have the Clover tool now.

    1. I made the bias tape last night, and man, that tool is amazing. This time it took me 45 minutes to make the tape. From cutting the fabric to ironing! A HUGE improvement! Wearable "muslin" is where I am at, or where I have been :)
